Luxury Camping: The Rise of Glamping Resorts

submitted on 13 June 2023 by findaccommodation.org

What the Glamp is Going On?

As if the human race hasn't already done enough damage to the great outdoors, we have now managed to turn nature into a high-end vacation spot with the rise of "glamping" resorts. For those not in the know (and really, why would you be?), glamping is the unholy marriage of the words "glamorous" and "camping," a concept that seems as contradictory as jumbo shrimp or military intelligence. And yet, here we are. But what does it all mean? Does glamping offer some kind of transcendent experience, combining the beauty of nature with the comforts of a five-star hotel? Are we finally able to have our cake and eat it too, or is this just another fad destined to fade away like parachute pants and the Macarena? Let's delve a little deeper into this baffling phenomenon and see if we can shed some light on the matter.

It's Not Camping, It's an "Experience"

So, what exactly can one expect from a glamping resort? For starters, expect to pay a pretty penny. You won't find any budget-friendly options at a glamping resort. No, sir. Like a fine wine or a rare cheese, you must shell out top dollar to indulge in the luxury camping experience. But fear not, for your investment will grant you access to such lavish amenities as:
  • King-sized beds (yes, in a tent)
  • Private bathrooms with hot water showers and flushing toilets
  • Climate-controlled tents (because nature is just too darn unpredictable)
  • Electricity (so you can Instagram your every move)
  • Room service (because roughing it is for peasants)
Yes, it seems no expense has been spared in the pursuit of making camping as utterly un-camp-like as possible. But hey, who needs fresh air and a connection with nature when you have a memory foam mattress and 500-thread-count sheets?

Glamping Resorts: The Ultimate Oxymoron

If you're still scratching your head, wondering how anyone could have possibly come up with the idea to make camping luxurious, then congratulations, you're not alone. It's a bit like turning a dive bar into a Michelin-starred restaurant or turning a monster truck rally into a ballet. Sure, you can do it, but at what cost? What's next? Are we going to find a way to make bungee jumping relaxing? Transform white-water rafting into a soothing spa experience? Only time will tell.

A Glamping We Will Go: A Cautionary Tale

Now, I'm not one to shy away from adventure or a new experience, so I decided to take the plunge and immerse myself in the world of glamping. For the sake of this article, you understand. I would never willingly subject myself to such an absurd experience otherwise. No matter how comfortable the beds may be... Upon arriving at my designated glamping resort, I was greeted by a smiling concierge who promptly handed me a glass of champagne. Because nothing says "welcome to the great outdoors" like a cold glass of bubbly. My tent – excuse me, my "luxury suite" – was everything I had been promised and more. Plush carpets lined the floors, the walls were adorned with tasteful artwork, and the air conditioning was set to a perfect 72 degrees Fahrenheit. I half expected to find a bear in a bowtie playing the grand piano in the corner. Alas, no such luck. As I settled in for the night, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. Surrounded by all the trappings of opulence, the true purpose of camping – to escape the daily grind and connect with the natural world – seemed to have been lost in translation. Or perhaps it had been intentionally left behind, like a forgotten pair of hiking boots.

The Verdict: Is Glamping Really Worth It?

After my brief foray into the world of glamping, I think I can safely say that it's not for everyone. If you're the type of person who needs the creature comforts of a luxury hotel while also pretending to enjoy the great outdoors, then perhaps glamping is your cup of tea. Or rather, your glass of champagne. However, if you're more of a traditionalist, like me, and prefer the simplicity of camping without all the unnecessary bells and whistles, then you may find glamping to be a bit of a letdown. A beautifully appointed, climate-controlled, room-service-provided letdown. But a letdown nonetheless. So, to answer our original question: Is glamping a transcendent experience, or just another flash-in-the-pan trend? The answer, as with most things in life, probably lies somewhere in the middle. But one thing's for certain: If this is what the future of camping looks like, then I think I'll stick to my trusty old tent and sleeping bag. At least then I won't have to worry about spilling champagne on the carpet.
